Most people think insurance agents just sell policies and collect commissions. The reality is far more complex. Here’s what we wish every client understood about working with an agent.
We’re Not Traditional Salespeople
The biggest misconception is that we’re trying to sell you the most expensive policy possible. Our success depends on keeping you as a client for years, not maximizing one sale. We actually spend most of our time talking people OUT of coverage they don’t need. A client who trusts us because we gave them good advise and saved them money will refer friends and family.
Captive vs. Independent – It Matters
Captive agents (think State Farm, Farmers and Allstate) work for one company and can only sell that company’s products. They’re often under pressure to meet sales quotas. Independent agents, like The Jemez Agency, represent multiple companies and can shop around. We don’t have quotas or sales targets to meet.
The best agents will tell you upfront which type they are and how they’re compensated.
Claims Are Where We Prove Our Worth
Anyone can sell you a policy online, but when disaster strikes, you’ll understand why a real agent matters. Do you want to dial that 800 number and talk to someone you don’t know (and who may not have the experience and knowledge) about a problem that can cost you thousands of dollars. Or do you want to walk into your agent’s office and sit down and discuss the problem and get answers and solutions from people with over 20 years of experience and knowledge.
What We Want From Clients
Be honest about your risks – we can’t protect you from things we don’t know about. Ask questions, lots of them if you want, but trust our expertise. We want you to think long term – the cheapest policy today might cost you thousands later.
The Bottom Line
Good agents are part financial advisor, part risk manager, part customer advocate. We’re not just selling you a contract – we’re promising to be there when your world falls apart. Choose an agent based on expertise and track record, not just prices.
